To fully appreciate and enjoy Rome and its province also means to dive into its pure nature delving among rivers, streams and the sandy shores of the sea, healthily spending time fishing while at the same time respecting the surrounding environment and its ichthyic heritage. VIA AURELIA

Fishing at dawn in near Ladispoli
Along the shores of Ladispoli, close to the beach establishment Il Pirata, anglers can devote themselves to fishing in the early hours of the morning. Gilthead breams – including large ones – are the main fish to be found here, if the conditions of the sea allow it. Recommended fishing techniques are surf casting and float fishing.
How to get there: take via Aurelia up to Ladispoli; once you get there look for the beach establishment Il Pirata.
Rules: a fishing license is necessary.

Fishing in Civitavecchia
The sea around Civitavecchia, just in front of the walls, is ideal for fishing sargos, saddled bream and sea bass between October and June. Recommended fishing techniques are surf casting, in particular for morays, or float fishing.
How to get there: take the Roma-Civitavecchia highway, exit at Civitavecchia Sud (south). Head towards the port until you reach the external reef.
Rules: a fishing license is necessary.
Fish: sargos, saddled breams, sea bass and morays.

Fishing close to the castle of Santa Severa
Close to the castle of Santa Severa, enthusiasts can spend time fishing in a very suggestive atmosphere. Clear waters are home to many ichthyic species, which can be fished in winter too, both in the evening and in the early morning. Surf casting, with lead fishing weights of 180 g, is recommended for striped bream; otherwise float fishing is advised for gilthead bream, especially in the area close to the rocks.
How to get there: : take the Roma-Civitavecchia highway and exit at Santa Severa.
Rules: a fishing license is necessary.
Fish: striped bream, gilthead bream, sea bass and saddled bream.

VIE CASSIA AND CLODIA

Fishing in Lake Martignano
Lake Martignano, with its clear waters and wonderful surrounding views, is particularly well-suited for fishing. Recommended fishing techniques are spinning, Bologna fishing and English fishing.
How to get there: : take via Cassia bis and then the first exit for Campagnano. Follow the road leading to the Valle del Baccano, then take a small narrow road which leads to the lake. To reach the opposite side, take via Cassia Braccianese and, when you reach Osteria Nuova, head towards Anguillara. Before reaching the town take a small road, on the right, which leads to the lake.
Rules: a fishing license is necessary.
Fish: carps, pikes and cavasso (a local fish).

Fishing in Lake Bracciano
The crystal clear waters of Lake Bracciano are ideal for fishing: carp fishing, spinning, and English fishing with 20 gramme floats. The latter is an interesting technique used to catch carps and chubs.
How to get there: take via Cassia bis and exit at Cesano. Head towards Anguillara, then towards Vigna di Valle to reach the lake’s shores.
Rules: a fishing license is necessary.
Fish: pikes, carps, chubs, eels, zatterino (a local fish) and royal perches.

THE AGRO CAPENATE

Fishing in the Tiber, near Castel Giubileo
This part of the Tiber is ideal for anglers especially in the hotter seasons when, due to the barrage of the dam, barbels, rudds, grey mullets, chubs – among other fish - head upstream.
Here the best fishing techniques are legering, especially for grey mullets, live bait fishing for zanders, or spinning.
How to get there: : take via Salaria and access the river under the dam at Castel Giubileo, about 1 km away from the Grande Raccordo Anulare (ring-road).

Fish: grey mullets, chubs, zanders, carps, barbels and rudds.

Fishing in the Nazzano- Tevere Farfa Nature Reserve
This part of the Tiber, which runs through the Nazzano Nature Reserve, is easily accessible for fishing, especially because the river current is very slow due the barrage of the river further down. Fishing techniques which can be used are float fishing in current, using fixed or Bolognese fishing rods, legering or casting bait on the bottom with a traditional technique.
How to get there: : take the highway from Rome towards Florence and exit at Fiano Romano. Follow the road signs towards Nazzano and then those for the Nature Reserve.
Rules: a fishing license is necessary ad well as a daily pass which costs € 1.55. It is forbidden to feed the fish with silkworms, but they can be used as bait.
Fish: chubs, pigo (a local fish), rudds, bleaks and zanders.

VIA SUBLACENSE

Fishing in the Aniene near Agosta
The Aniene river, where it flows close to Agosta, is still clean. It is particularly well-suited for fishing trout as these fish find their natural habitat in this area’s river bends, deep holes and submerged tree trunks.
Anglers can fish with natural or artificial bait; the river water which runs along the path flanking the bank, in the midst of a thick vegetation, is very productive. In addition, spinning can be carried out but anglers must be careful to avoid the spoon-bait hooking onto the many underwater obstacles.
How to get there: : take the Roma-L’Aquila highway and exit at Vicovaro-Mandela. Here take via Tiburtina, on the left, and then via Sublacense, on the right, which flanks the river. You can access the river via the fork in the road for Marano Equo or just before Agosta.
Rules: a fishing license is necessary. Silkworms cannot be used as bait.
Fish: sea trout.

Fishing in the Aniene near Saracinesco
In this part, close to Saracinesco, the Aniene waters are rich in big trout which find an ideal habitat in the slow flowing of its dark and deep waters.
The ideal fishing technique here is spinning with heavy weights (Martin 9, Mepps 3) which enable anglers to inspect deep holes. Fishing with minnows is also possible. In any event, “descent” fishing must be practised.
How to get there: take the Roma-L’Aquila highway and exit at Vicovaro-Mandela. Here take via Tiburtina, on the left. Leave your car just before the fork in the road for Saracinesco and reach the river banks.
Rules: a fishing license is necessary
Fish: sea trout.

Fishing in the Aniene close to Subiaco
Here anglers can fish in the very picturesque background provided by the clear waters of the upper Aniene.
Trout can be fished both with natural baits (worms, crickets and portasassi – a type of maggot), and artificial ones (spinning and fly fishing).
How to get there: : take the Roma-L’Aquila highway and exit at Vicovaro-Mandela. Here take via Tiburtina, on the left, then via Sublacense on the right, and follow it to Subiaco. Once you have crossed this town, take the road on the left for Jenne, and follow the road signs for Villa di Nerone. From here, take a small road on the right which flanks the river.
Rules: a fishing license is necessary. Silkworms cannot be used as bait. In addition, between Piscicareglio and the ENEL power plant, only fly fishing is allowed.
Fish: sea trout.

Fishing in the Simbrivio
The Simbrivio is a tributary of the Aniene river which flows from Monte Autore, close to Vallepietra. It is a small stream with clear waters hemmed in by banks covered in a rich vegetation. Recommended fishing techniques are match fishing with natural baits, spinning with whirling 3 grammes spoon-bait, and taking very precise casts.
How to get there: : take the Roma-L’Aquila highway and exit at Vicovaro-Mandela. Here follow via Tiburtina, on the left, then via Sublacense on the right, until you reach Subiaco. Once you have crossed this town, take the road on the left for Jenne, and follow the road signs for Vallepietra-Trevi until you reach the fork in the road for the latter.
Rules: a fishing license is necessary. Silkworms cannot be used as bait.
Fish: sea trout.

THE CASTELLI ROMANI

Fishing in Lake Albano
This lake offers plenty of good sized fish but as its waters are deep and full of algae, they aren’t easy to catch. Anglers can fish from a boat, with a belly boat and using the spinning technique, or from land. If you choose to fish from land, you must cast your line at a good distance and thus it is best to use heavy-weight artificial baits (Martin 12, Spinner Bait, leaded silicone baits).
Those who wish to can also practise fishing with floats (tenches, rudd, chubs, but also iridescent trout which are introduced to the lake when the season opens) as long as they have long precise rods (at least 7 metres), or Bolognese ones. In addition, deep carp fishing is possible with boilies.
How to get there: follow via Appia up to Albano; just before the town, turn left towards Castel Gandolfo and follow the road signs for the lake. To fish you must leave the area where the bathing establishments are.
Rules: a fishing license is necessary.
Fish: chub, black bass, tenches, pikes, carps, iridescent trout, rudd and eels.

Fishing in Lake Giulianello
This small lake (it's perimeter is 1.5 km) in Velletri municipality has thick vegetation growing along its shores and is a true fishing haven. Recommended fishing techniques are spinning, English fishing and fishing with bait on the bottom.
How to get there: follow via Appia up to Velletri. From the town centre, follow the road signs for Latina, take the road for Valmontone and head towards Giulianello and Cori. About half way in between these two towns (3 km), an unpaved road on the left leads to the small lake’s shores.
Rules: a fishing license is necessary.
Fish: royal perches, pikes, largemouth bass, tenches, eels and rudds.

THE SOUTHERN COAST

The lakes near Trigoria
Laghi Trigoria is an angling sports association which includes two fine lakes and a chalet used for dining surrounded by a thick and florid wood rich in age-old oaks, poplars, acacias and an abundance of flowers. In addition its grounds are crossed by a stream with crystalline water. It is a true jewel set in the green of the Roman countryside, ideal for the whole family and particularly for fishing enthusiasts.
On Thursday and Friday mornings, spinning is allowed (spoon-bait, minnows), and fly fishing is in the smaller lake, while other techniques (trout fishing, with bombarda weighted floats or float fishing) are allowed at all times in both lakes.
How to get there: from the Grande Raccordo Anulare (ring road), take exit 25 (via Laurentina) towards Trigoria.
Rules: : to be able to fish here, anglers must purchase the F.I.L.P.S membership card (which can be bought on the spot). It costs € 3,00 per year and is valid in all F.I.L.P.S associated lakes.
Fish: trout, chars, sea trout, grass carps, sturgeon.

TOWARDS ROME’S SEASIDE

Fishing in the Tiber
In Rome, close the Grande Raccordo Anulare (ring road) exit for Magliana, the Tiber is rich in fish such as grey mullets, chubs, eels and more. Recommended fishing techniques to use here are float fishing in current for chubs and grey mullets, legering for barbels and casting bait on the bottom, with a traditional technique.
How to get there: take via del Mare and then the turn-off to reach the GRA (ring road). Follow the paved road until you reach the end of the cycle track. On foot, reach the banks of the Tiber, where the GRA bridge is.
Rules: a fishing license is necessary.
Fish: grey mullets, chubs, barbels, bleaks and eels.
