HISTORICAL AND NATURAL ATTRACTIONS

The Monti (mountains) Simbruini are plentiful in water which flows into the Aniene and into its tributary Simbrivio. Ever since ancient times, this was channelled into the aqueducts which fed Rome. Another characteristic of these mountains are the spectacular caves, due to the karstic phenomena which have created complex underground  morphologies: dolines, swallow-holes, and the famous Grotta dell’Inferniglio, close to Jenne, as well as the Grotta del Simbrivio in Vallepietra.
Mantles of oaks, beech groves and maples are replaced, close to the summits, by vast expanses of gentians, irises, wild orchids and primroses. The park is home to the Apennine wolf, some marsican bears as well as squirrels, wild hogs and roe deer, not to mention the many predatory birds such as eagles, peregrine falcons and great ravens.
Nature lovers can take walks and trips to the mountains; there are many destinations to pick from, such as the Camposecco meadow (Camerata Nuova), the plain of Fondi di Jenne, close to Monte Livata, the source of the Aniene river next to Fiumana and the Campo la Pietra plateau, in Vallepietra. Religious trips include the visit to the famous Santuario – sanctuary –della Santissma Trinità, where pilgrims go particularly during the feast of the SS. Trinità and on Sant’Anna’s day. A path which leads to the summit of the Monte Autore (1856 metres) starts from the sanctuary; this crosses through some of the most beautiful woods in the Apennines.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

THE UPPER ANIENE VALLEY

The Aniene Valley is an ideal place to spend some free time immersed in nature; there are many trips which can be made either on foot, on a mountain-bike, by horse or simply by visiting the many historical-archaeological sites in the Simbruini area.
Visitors must not miss a descent along the Aniene river’s rapids; this can be done with a hydro-speed, a rubber dinghy or a kayak, or by canyoning through the narrow ravines whilst admiring the scenic surrounding nature.  Periodically, orienteering races - sporting orientation competitions which are open to all, including the disabled - are organized on Monte Livata.

A TRADITIONAL RECIPE

 THE MONTI SIMBRUINI REGIONAL PARK

The name of the Monti (mountains) Simbruini, as we know, evokes the abundance of water which flows into the Aniene and in its tributary Simbrivio. Since ancient times, this was channelled into the aqueducts which fed Rome. The other main characteristic of these mountains are the spectacular caves, as the richness of the karstic phenomena has created complex underground  morphologies: dolines and swallow-holes greatly interest speleologists and are fascinating for visitors. The most important are the famous Grotta dell’Inferniglio, close to Jenne, as well as the Grotta del Simbrivio, in Vallepietra.
Mantles of oaks and beech groves, with age-old maples stretch on the mountain slopes and are replaced, close to the summits, by vast grassy expanses of mountain flowers: gentians, irises, wild orchids and primroses. In the plateau above Vallepietra, during springtime,  the plain is covered with yellow and purple violets – a breathtaking view.
In the least accessible areas of the park lives the  Apennine wolf, some marsican bears have been spotted too, although it is extremely difficult to see them. On the other hand, it is easier to see squirrels, wild hogs and roe deer. Predatory  birds include eagles and peregrine falcons which nest on the rocky faces, whereas Greek partridges live in the alpine meadows. Other species of birds include alpine choughs, mountains swallows and  Eurasian nuthatches; great ravens are also common. The Camposecco meadow (close to Camerata Nuova), the plain of Fondi di Jenne, close to Monte Livata, the source of the Aniene river next to Fiumana (Trevi) and the Campo la Pietra plateau, in Vallepietra, are just a few of the destinations for walks and trips offered by the Monti Simbruini.
On the Tagliata rocks, which can be reached via the road starting in Vallepietra, is the famous Santuario – sanctuary –della Santissma Trinità, where pilgrims go particularly during the feast of the SS. Trinità (the Sunday after Pentecost) and on Sant’Anna’s day (26 July), when the procession with the evocative rite of the “pianto delle zitelle” (spinsters’ wail) is held.
The sanctuary holds an extremely rare medieval image of the Trinity; this is represented by three figures which are each separate and identical, instead of the more common group with the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost in the form of a dove. A path leading to the summit of the Monte Autore (1856 metres) starts from the sanctuary; this crosses some of the most beautiful woods in the Apennines. From the top there is a splendid view of all the other peaks.
In the park there are many hostels, refuges and structures for the many sport activities which can be carried out; from canoeing and rafting to free-climbing on the rocky faces, from spelunking to horse-riding, to sports fishing to ski - particularly cross-country one - which the slopes of Monte Livata are famous for.
The park office, in Jenne, provides information and direction on the different activities, paths, and possible excursions.
