Historical and natural attractions

The Preneste area's cultural heritage doesn't focus only on its archaeological past; indeed,  many new museums have been born in what were once famous noble houses, now returned to the people. In Genazzano the Colonna castle, which preserves 17th century frescoes by followers of the Cavalier d'Arpino,  is in the town's small medieval fortress. Close to the castle are the remains of a nymphaeum, used for plays and celebrations, which Bramante built between 1501-1503, on an ancient  nymphaeum model; for many years this was reputed to be Roman.
The huge spaces of this wonderful building, bought by the municipality in 1979, today have become the seat of the Polo Museale Internazionale d'Arte Contemporanea (international museum centre for contemporary art).
The Colonna family also had a castle in Zagarolo; today this is known as Palazzo Colonna Rospigliosi; every summer a festival of music, theatre and cinema is held here. The building also houses the first Museo del Giocattolo (toy museum). Further, the Museo della Civiltà Contadina (farming civilization museum), as well as the Museo Geopaleontologico con l'Osservatorio Astronomico (geo-palaeontological museum, with astronomic observatory)  are both in Cave. The Museo Centro Studi sulla Pittura e di Paesaggio Europea del Lazio (European landscape painting museum and study centre in Latium) is in Olevano, whereas Capranica offers the Museo Civico Naturalistico dei Monti Prenestini (the Monti Prenestini natural museum). Finally, the curious Museo della Canapa (hemp museum)  is in Pisoniano - there's truly something for everyone.

Outdoor activities

THE WILD BEAUTY OF THE MONTI PRENESTINI

Guadagnolo, the highest town in the Rome province, can be reached from Palestrina, where a road starts and winds its way up through the mountains; the town (1218 metres) clings to a rocky spur. Just beneath the town, a short path leads to a practice wall for climbing.
Trips can be made throughout the year along different routes, including the Karol Woityla one, close to the Santuario della Mentorella, as well as the path which crosses the Monumento Naturale (natural monument) della Valle delle Cannuccette. Other paths are accessible close to Capranica Prenestina, also seat of the Museo Civico Naturalistico (natural civic museum) dei Monti Prenestini (tel. + 39 06 3584301). Mountain-bike rides can be taken between Poli and San Gregorio da Sassola.
