Historical and Natural attractions

Via Casilina runs through the vast rustic outskirts of Rome, offering fascinating views: just after Torre Maura the majestic arches of the Aqueduct of Claudius appear on the right.
The road reaches the slopes of the Alban Hills where visitors can see the smallest municipality in Latium, Colonna. The town was built, according to tradition, where the ancient city of Labicum Quintanense stood.
The territory of Colonna still has many traces of the countryside villas which belonged to leading figures of ancient Rome, such as those close to the imposing Mausoleum  along via Labicana. Visitors must not miss the parish church of San Nicola di Bari, whose pleasant façade is decorated in the18th century Baroque style ("barocchetto'). The last stop on this itinerary is Labico, which stands on a hill at the kilometre mark 39,000 of the via Casilina.
The town preserves its medieval features, although its main structures were rebuilt during the 17th century when Lugnano passed over to the Barberini family.
An unusual complex just outside the centre of the town reminds us that we are in an area dedicated to wine-growing; this is the  Arnari, a structure skillfully built in the walls of tuff stone, which was probably used for wine-pressing.

Outdoor activities

TRIPS TO THE MONTI LEPINI

The Monti Lepini, which rise between the Pontina plain and the Sacco-Liri Valley, are the first spurs of the  Latium anti-Apennines and a meeting point between the Mediterranean scrub and the fresher beeches and hornbeams woods. Their tormented morphology - at times harsh and arid, at times gentle and fresh - along with their many woods, make them one of the most interesting natural sites close to Rome to visit.
Trips start from Montelanico and Carpineto Romano, but many other places can be visited, such as Monte Lupone which is reached via a climb from Segni. Visits to these mountains can thus be made year-round. Other possible excursions are to some karst caves, but only if accompanied by expert speleologists who will provide any necessary equipment.
