Historical and Natural attractions
Once via Casilina has passed through the neighbouring area of the Castelli Romani, it enters the Sacco Valley, crossing Valmontone. This town is home to the enormous Doria Pamphilj Palace, which counts 365 rooms, and the Archeological Museum, which has an unusual sponsor: the Treno Alta Velocità company (high speed trains). Close to the palace, the Collegiata - collegiate church - dell'Assunta was built in the 17th century, following a plan by Giovanni Battista De Rossi. Four kilometres away stands Artena, a town of prelates and brigands, which originated in the 12th century with the name of Castrum Montefortini. The Borghese Palace, Piazza Vittoria (which was the former Borghese square), the Palace of the Governor and the church of Santa Maria del Gesù are all worth seeing. At the bottom of the Monte Lupone lies Segni, once surrounded by Cyclopean walls. It was an important church property from the 12th-13th centuries and a papal summer residence. Because of this, it was given suitable premises, today's Seminario Vescovile (Episcopal seminary); Santa Maria Assunta cathedral is the monumental centre of the town. The nearby Carpineto Romano was also a papal city. The charming medieval towns of Gorga and Gavignano must not be missed either; these overlook the Sacco Valley, close to the Ciociaria region. The first has an imposing castle and some small Romanesque churches, the latter has the fine Baronale Palace and the Traietto Palace, with frescoes by Federico Zuccari (1542-1609).

TRIPS TO THE MONTI LEPINI
The Monti Lepini, which rise between the Pontina plain and the Sacco-Liri Valley, are the first spurs of the Latium anti-Apennines and a meeting point between the Mediterranean scrub and the fresher beeches and hornbeams woods. Their tormented morphology - at times harsh and arid, at times gentle and fresh - along with their many woods, make them one of the most interesting natural sites close to Rome to visit. Trips start from Montelanico and Carpineto Romano, but many other places can be visited, such as Monte Lupone which is reached via a climb from Segni. Visits to these mountains can thus be made year-round. Other possible excursions are to some karst caves, but only if accompanied by expert speleologists who will provide any necessary equipment.
