Historical and natural attractions

According to tradition, Ostia was founded by the legendary fourth king of Rome, Ancus Martius (620 B.C.) as Rome's port, where the Tiber joined the sea. Only at the end of the 19th century did archaeological excavations bring to light the ancient ruins of the city.
Entrance to the site is near the Roman Gate, which marks the place where the via Ostiense enters the ancient town walls. Along the first part of the road, outside the gate, lies the Ostiense necropolis (1st century B.C. - late imperial age). Inside the town walls, via Ostiense was the decumanus maximus, the main artery along the north-south axis in Roman cities.  Another interesting ruin is the Caserma dei Vigili (fire station) which controlled Rome as well as Ostia.
Further on is the theatre (Augustan era), still used for summer shows after its restoration in the 20th century. The theatre is connected to a unique structure, which has not been found in any other Roman town, known as the piazzale delle Coporazioni (the square of the guilds). Its name derives from the different commercial associations (corporations) which had their offices in the porticoes; the guilds are represented in the 2nd century floor-mosaics.
The Republican castrum, the monumental Forum with its judicial basilica, the temple of Rome and Augustus, the Forum's baths and the majestic Capitolium, a temple dedicated to the Capitoline triad, as well as the nearby Thermopolium, are the most suggestive buildings in beautiful ancient Ostia.

A BOAT TRIP ON THE TIBER

"The Tiber guides us through the secrets of an extraordinary area, and takes us through the history, traditions and legends of the territory it crosses. It maps out the route between two points: its source and the sea. Although its appearance is now somewhat less imposing, the Tiber is the 'river of history', fatal and magic, the 'sky-blue' link between history and legend". (Marco Scataglini, from "Il Viaggio del Tevere" Ed. ITER 2004).
This ancient magic can be freshly experienced on a boat trip from Ponte Marconi to Old Ostia.  Expert guides (bookable via CEA) will take visitors, first on the boat and then by foot, through an unexpected and spontaneous natural setting, to places which are soaked in ancient Roman history. Bicycle rides along the banks of the Tiber are also possible.
