Historical and natural attractions
During the imperial era, the inadequacy of the port of Old Ostia obliged the Emperors Claudius and, later, Trajan, to build a new port on the other mouth of the Tiber . Close by, the city of Portus was built with baths, temples and imperial residences. Between Porto and Ostia, at Isola Sacra, stood the necropolis of Porto (Trajan era), where sailors and dock workers were laid to rest. The burial places are small and very simple, in the form of a small temple or house, and decorated with stuccoes, paintings and mosaics. Along the banks of the canal at Fiumicino, visitors can see the ancient Episcopio, or castle of Porto, which was restructured in the late 16th century. At the end of via Portuense stood the borgo marinaro (sea village).

A BOAT TRIP ON THE TIBER
"The Tiber guides us through the secrets of an extraordinary area, and takes us through the history, traditions and legends of the territory it crosses. It maps out the route between two points: its source and the sea. Although its appearance is now somewhat less imposing, the Tiber is the 'river of history', fatal and magic, the 'sky-blue' link between history and legend". (Marco Scataglini, from "Il Viaggio del Tevere" Ed. ITER 2004). This ancient magic can be freshly experienced on a boat trip from Ponte Marconi to Old Ostia. Expert guides (bookable via CEA) will take visitors, first on the boat and then by foot, through an unexpected and spontaneous natural setting, to places which are soaked in ancient Roman history. Bicycle rides along the banks of the Tiber are also possible.
