OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

MONUMENTAL...DAYS!

Family walks and nature tours, by foot and by bicycle, can be taken in the Bracciano and Martignano park, and in the Natural Monument of Caldara di Manziana; this also has an active sulphureous spring and a very rare birch copse.
Pleasant and unusual initiatives for children and families, such as the “Festa delle Fate dei Fiori” (feast of the flower fairies), held at the end of May, when different activities are held, and  guided tours and games - characterized by myth and magic - organized in the park.  At the end of September, the “Festa degli Gnomi” (gnome feast) takes place, in much the same fashion.
The lakes offer pleasant canoe trips, such as the tour of the Martignano lake; canoes can  also be hired.  Swimming t is possible only in certain spots.

ON VIA CASSIA: THE PARK OF VEIO

For hundreds of years, expanses of  wheat and a tangled vegetation have hidden the wonderful ruins of what was once Rome’s first important  rival: the Etruscan city of Veio. Important archaeological excavations have brought to light  the remains of sanctuaries, temples (that thought to be Apollo’s is particularly important), the municipium and many necropolises, all in the archaeological site in the Regional Park of Veio, opened in 1997;  this includes the wide area of the Roman countryside known as the Agro Veiate.
Set in an exceptionally beautiful nature visitors can see, apart from the ruins of Veio, other important historical vestiges as well as modern and vital vines, large farms, towns and roads.
The park is very large and includes: the towns of Campagnano di Roma, Castelnuovo di Porto, Formello, Magliano Romano, Mazzano Romano, Morlupo, Riano, Rome and Sacrofano, each with its own natural beauties and monuments to see.
The park entrance closest to Rome is near the medieval town of Isola Farnese, which is certainly worth a visit for its church of San Pancrazio.

This dates back to the 16th century and has 4th century frescoes, including the cycle of the apse which is ascribed to the Melozzo da Forlì school. In the area between Campagnano di Roma and Formello, the countryside becomes much more wild: this area is known as the valle del Sorbo. A castle has protected the adjoining town since the 10th century; on the latter’s ruins, at the beginning of the 15th century, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sorbo was founded. It is perched on a spur of rock overlooking some stunning scenery. In Formello, close to the Romanic church of San Lorenzo, the Museum of Agro (countryside) Veientano is hosted in Palazzo Chigi, the ancient municipal building.

Sacrofano is the only town within the Rome province where traces of an ancient Jewish ghetto survive.
