HISTORICAL AND NATURAL ATTRACTIONS

The beautiful natural and historic environment which characterizes lake Bracciano and the close lake Martignano today forms the protected Park of the lake of  Bracciano e Martignano.
Bracciano lake is surrounded by the Monti (mountains) Sabatini. The archaeological sites in this area are Roman, such as the small town of Vicarello, near Trevignano, located in a thermal area which was known - and  used - for its beneficial properties in Roman time too. In the Civic Archeological Museum of Trevignano, the many archaeological finds of the Bracciano area are on display.
Bracciano, Anguillara and Trevignano are small charming towns along the lake shores. The medieval church of San Liberato, the church of the Assunta in Trevignano, with its Raphael-school frescoes, and the Odescalchi castle in Bracciano are all noteworthy for their beauty. Nature lovers can appreciate Manziana’s two sites: the Natural Oasis of the Macchia Grande and the Caldara Natural Monument. Half way between the Monti Sabatini and the Monti della Tolfa is the Nature Reserve of  Monterano.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Family walks and nature tours, by foot and by bicycle, can be taken in the Bracciano and Martignano park, and in the Natural Monument of Caldara di Manziana; this also has an active sulphureous spring and a very rare birch copse.
Pleasant and unusual initiatives for children and families, such as the “Festa delle Fate dei Fiori” (feast of the flower fairies), held at the end of May, when different activities are held, and  guided tours and games - characterized by myth and magic - organized in the park.  At the end of September, the “Festa degli Gnomi” (gnome feast) takes place, in much the same fashion.
The lakes offer pleasant canoe trips, such as the tour of the Martignano lake; canoes can  also be hired.  Swimming t is possible only in certain spots.

A TRADITIONAL RECIPE

BAKED COREGONS (LOCAL FISH)

Category: main course
Difficulty: easy
Ready in: 45 minutes
Season: year-round

Ingredients (four servings)
2 coregons (about 600g each), 1 lemon, 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, 3 fresh leaves of sage, 1 sprig of rosemary, salt and pepper.

Preparation
Grease a baking-pan, place the slices of lemons on its bottom and the fish (washed and scaled) on top. Mince the sage, rosemary and lemon rind and season the fish, drizzle the oil on top, and add salt and pepper. Bake in an oven at 200° (C°) for about 15 minutes. When cooked, squeeze the lemon juice on the fish and serve.

On via Clodia, towards Bracciano and Martignano lakes  


The beautiful natural and historic environment which characterizes lake Bracciano and the small, but fascinating, close lake Martignano, today from the protected Park of the lakes of Bracciano and  Martignano. Both originated from the deep hollows caused by volcanic action.

The vegetation close to the lake is marked by the characteristic reed thickets where several types of birds live, including wild ducks.  Families of nutrias live in a bay close to Trevignano. Lake Bracciano has been Rome’s water basin since ancient times, and was then known as Sabatinus Lacus; its circular form recalls the volcanic origin of the area. The Monti Sabatini which surround it form a wavy crown: the surrounding nature is luxurious and the scenery, quiet and attractive, is relaxing. 

Oak trees and chestnut woods cover the Monti Sabatini, alternated to olive trees, fields and pastures. The woods are also home to the rare wild cat, beavers, beech martens, nutrias, and offer the chance to take many enjoyable walks. 

Traces of lake-dwellings along lake Bracciano’s shores show that there have been human settlements in this area since the Bronze age.

In pre-Roman age, the lake was inhabited by the Etruscans who had their main settlement in Sabazia: there are many archaeological sites from this era, or the Roman one. Among these is the small town of Vicarello, close to Trevignano, located in a thermal area which was known and used for its beneficial properties in Roman time too.

In the Civic Archeological Museum of Trevignano, the many archaeological findings of the Bracciano area are on display.

I nuclei storici di BRACCIANO, ANGUILLARA e TREVIGNANO, graziose cittadine affacciate sullo specchio d’acqua, risalgono all’epoca medievale.

The historic centres of Bracciano, Anguillara and Trevignano, small charming towns on the lake shores, are medieval: buildings from between the 11th century and the Renaissance line the narrow roads, from which beautiful glimpses of the lake can be seen. Shops and artisan laboratories, although modern in appearance, survive here and recall the towns’ past.

Bracciano’ s medieval church of San Liberato whose bell tower, dating back to the 11th century, is one of the oldest in Lazio, is particularly noteworthy.

The church of the Assunta in Trevignano has interesting Raphael-school frescoes; Odescalchi castle in Bracciano and the palazzo Baronale di Anguillara are beautiful and characteristic examples of fortified renaissance residences. The former, which was built in a strategic position on a wide rocky tablemount on a sheer drop over the lake, was rebuilt by Napoleone Orsini in 1470 when he enlarged the former Rocca (stronghold) of the Prefetti di Vico, the previous noble family in the area.

A few kilometres away from Bracciano, the Natural oasis of the Macchia Grande of Manziana is an image of what the flourishing vegetation, which originally covered the area between the Monti Sabatini and the Monti della Tolfa, must have been like. It is rich in age-old trees, including Turkey oaks.
Close by is also the Caldara di Manziana Natural Monument, where sulphureous pools of gas and water, at a temperature of 20°C, spring from earth - traces of this area’s previous volcanic activity. The vegetation which surrounds Caldara is formed by Mediterranean shrub and oak groves, with the rare exception of a copse of beeches, a northern species which generally lives in colder temperatures. .

Half way between the Monti Sabatini and the Monti della Tolfa is the Nature Reserve of  Monterano. In the midst of the spectacular nature, characterized by frequent differences in height and a rich wild fauna, the suggestive ruins of the city of Monterano emerge. The city was suddenly abandoned in 1656 because of a plague epidemic and was destroyed by the French in 1799.
