HISTORICAL AND NATURAL ATTRACTIONS

The extraordinary nature which surrounds the Treja river forms the Suburban Park of the Treja Valley. Close to Mazzano Romano, the Treja river creates the fascinating Monte Gelato waterfall; next to it stands a recently restored ancient waterwheel.
Close to the Pizzopiede hill, the Faliscans had founded the city of Narce, which today has almost completely disappeared.
The itineraries presented here depart both from Mazzano and the medieval town of Calcata, guarding the far eastern margin of the park, and bordering with via Flaminia.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Family walks and nature tours, by foot and by bicycle, can be taken in the Bracciano and Martignano park, and in the Natural Monument of Caldara di Manziana; this also has an active sulphureous spring and a very rare birch copse.
Pleasant and unusual initiatives for children and families, such as the “Festa delle Fate dei Fiori” (feast of the flower fairies), held at the end of May, when different activities are held, and  guided tours and games - characterized by myth and magic - organized in the park.  At the end of September, the “Festa degli Gnomi” (gnome feast) takes place, in much the same fashion.
The lakes offer pleasant canoe trips, such as the tour of the Martignano lake; canoes can  also be hired.  Swimming t is possible only in certain spots.

A TRADITIONAL RECIPE

BAKED COREGONS (LOCAL FISH)

Category: main course
Difficulty: easy
Ready in: 45 minutes
Season: year-round

Ingredients (four servings)
2 coregons (about 600g each), 1 lemon, 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, 3 fresh leaves of sage, 1 sprig of rosemary, salt and pepper.

Preparation
Grease a baking-pan, place the slices of lemons on its bottom and the fish (washed and scaled) on top. Mince the sage, rosemary and lemon rind and season the fish, drizzle the oil on top, and add salt and pepper. Bake in an oven at 200° (C°) for about 15 minutes. When cooked, squeeze the lemon juice on the fish and serve.

THE PARK OF TREJA VALLEY, BETWEEN VIA CASSIA AND FLAMINIA

The extraordinary natural environment which surrounds the Treja river forms the Suburban Park of the Treja Valley; the park gets its name from the steep and sinuous river which crosses it and digs deep ravines in the tuffaceous soil, as well as creating the waterfalls and cataracts which the Park is most famous for. This protected area stretches between the Rome province area (which Mazzano Romano belongs to) and that of the Viterbo province (which Calcata belongs to). The first entrance to the park is close to Mazzano Romano which, perched on the top of a cliff, dominates the ravines where the river flows. Narrow alleys ascend in spirals towards the centre of the town, where visitors find small  turreted palaces characterized by double lancet windows and scattered fragments of stone, engraved with the emblems of the town’s important families.
The Park office is in  Mazzano too; it has useful publications such as the plan of the park. The public can also ask experts’ advice, who can help  in the choices of the different itineraries.
Close to Mazzano Romano, the Treja river forms the fascinating Monte Gelato waterfall; next to it stands a recently restored ancient waterwheel which was positioned there to exploit the energy of the water.
In the neighborhood, close to the river course, an active furnace still stands which bakes bricks and tiles according to the old tradition; it thus continues an ancient productive activity practiced in this area at least since the 16th century. The visit to the furnace is highly recommended as it allows visitors to view the different brick-preparing phases and to learn the elements of a material culture which is, unfortunately, disappearing. 

The unique environment of this park, which also includes wide areas destined to farms and livestock breeding, is connected to its geological volcanic origin, which explains the many vertical rock faces and the land’s frequent differences in height.

The abundance of water courses, characteristic of the Treja valley, allows a thick humid forest - at times impenetrable -  to develop, as well as the survival of a characteristic aquatic fauna.
Within this area there are interesting archaeological and historical vestiges as an ancient – but not well known - people lived: the Faliscans. They were connected, for customs and political agreements, to the Etruscans, but spoke Latin.

Their territory spread from Mazzano Romano to the lower Viterbo area: within the park there are Faliscan necropolises, tombs, roads, hydraulic tunnels and fortification walls. Close to the Pizzopiede hill the Faliscans had founded the city of Narce, which today has almost completely disappeared.

The Treja park offers many and different itineraries: the paths are mostly well marked, so visitors can venture into the forest alone. The itineraries presented here depart both from Mazzano and the medieval town of Calcata, guarding the far eastern margin of the park and bordering with via Flaminia.

Perched on a drum of rock, the town went through extraordinary vicissitudes in the middle of the 20th century: it was declared to be unsafe and abandoned by its population during the ‘60s, but was later repopulated, after consolidation work,  mainly by artists and intellectuals who sought an isolated environment, immersed in a nature which is still  free from traffic and pollution.
