HISTORICAL AND NATURAL ATTRACTIONS

This interesting itinerary unfolds between via Flaminia and via Tiberina, where visitors can admire several urban conglomerations dating back to the archaic age, such as near Fiano Romano, in the archaeological area of Lucus Feroniae, at kilometre mark 18.500 of Via Tiberina.
This was an ancient religious and commercial site, built around a sacred wood dedicated to the goddess Feronia; its remains are in the National Museum of  Lucus Feroniae, inside the site.
In Capena, the palazzo dei Monaci is surrounded by the ancient medieval town; the building kept its monastic function until the 19th century. The church of San Leone is enchanting, and dates back to before the 13th century; it is located in the old cemetery at the edge of the town. Fiano Romano’s fine fortified castle, which belonged to the Orsini family -  who gave it its current 15th century appearance -  was originally built by the monks of Saint Paul too.

A TRADITIONAL RECIPE

SAN GIOVANNI SNAILS

Category: main course
Difficulty: easy
Ready in: 2 hours
Season: summer

Ingredients (four servings)
1kg of well cleaned snails, 1 onion, three cloves of garlic, extra virgin olive oil, 1kg of cubed tomatoes (or substitute canned tomatoes), 4 salted anchovies, Roman mint (a lot), marjoram, 1 glass of dry white wine, salt and peperoncino (small Italian chilli).

Preparation
Wash the snails, place them in a pot and cover with cold salty water. Bring the water to a boil, and cook for 15 minutes. Rinse them under running water and throw away any snails which haven’t come out of their shells. Fry the onion and minced garlic until browned, add the cubed tomatoes, peperoncino, the washed and minced anchovies, the mint and the marjoram and cook for 10 minutes. Add the snails and cook for about an hour, adding white wine as needed. Serve as a soup with toasted slices of casareccio (rustic country loaf) bread.

TURRETED TOWNS AND ABBEYS IN THE AGRO CAPENATE

Via Tiberina crosses the green plain west of the Tiber, inhabited since the 8th century B.C. by the Capenates, a Latin people. Important traces still remain of the archaic urban conglomerates, close to Fiano Romano, in the archaeological area of Lucus Feroniae, at kilometre mark 18.500 of via Tiberina.

This was an ancient religious and commercial site, built around a sacred wood dedicated to the goddess Feronia; its remains are in the National Museum  Lucus Feroniae, inside the site.
The area was a rich agricultural plain in Roman times but was abandoned at the end of the 4th century; its revival coincided with the millennium, when new towns and farmhouses were built, often around monasteries, where the previous urban centres had stood.

The revival of agriculture in the Capenate area was due to the monks’ efforts, especially those of the Roman abbey of San Paolo fuori le Mura, who had feudal possession of this area. This happened in Capena, where the medieval town surrounds the Palazzo dei Monaci, which kept its monastic function until the 19th century. The church of San Leone is enchanting, and dates back to before the 13th century; it is located in the old cemetery at the edge of the town.
Fiano Romano’s fine fortified castle, which belonged to the Orsini family who gave it its current 15th century appearance, had been built originally by the monks of Saint Paul too.
