HISTORICAL AND NATURAL ATTRACTIONS

Further north in the region, visitors can reach the Nature Reserve of Nazzano-Tevere Farfa,  an important stop for migrating birds. The nature regional reserve, of European interest, spreads over 700 hectares; its habitats are all influenced by the river and the swamp. Many migratory birds can be found along the banks, in the thick reed thickets, including the red heron.
There are several towns in the reserve area, including Nazzano, which is perched on a tuff spur and dominated by an imposing castle (13th – 14th century). In its medieval part, which spirals  the steep rock, Nazzano hosts the Museo del Fiume (museum of the river). The church of Sant’Antimo (pre 952), on a hill close to the town, is notable because of its pre-Roman columns, the Cosmati style mosaics and its 10th century pulpit. The apse is frescoed by Antoniazzo Romano (15th century).
Torrita Tiberina used to be a watch tower on the Tiber; it too has a fascinating medieval historical centre, whose alleys open onto panoramas overlooking the Tiber valley.
The river’s course then leads to Ponzano Romano; close by is the Benedictine abbey of Sant’Andrea in flumine (10th century), an important side of Christian cult and culture.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

A SACRED MOUNTAIN: MOUNT SORATTE

Mount Soratte  offers visitors many ways to discover nature. Thanks to its height and its beautiful and harsh nature, activities range from pleasant trips along paths with differing degrees of difficulty, winding along panoramic views, hermitages and mountain churches, to the exploration of caves and tunnels inside the mount, to free-climbing on three different rocky mountainsides (14 open ways). Fight lovers will find a launch base for hand-gliding on the top of the mount. Mountain-bike lovers too have a variety of paths, with different degrees of difficulty, to choose from.

A TRADITIONAL RECIPE

SAN GIOVANNI SNAILS

Category: main course
Difficulty: easy
Ready in: 2 hours
Season: summer

Ingredients (four servings)
1kg of well cleaned snails, 1 onion, three cloves of garlic, extra virgin olive oil, 1kg of cubed tomatoes (or substitute canned tomatoes), 4 salted anchovies, Roman mint (a lot), marjoram, 1 glass of dry white wine, salt and peperoncino (small Italian chilli).

Preparation
Wash the snails, place them in a pot and cover with cold salty water. Bring the water to a boil, and cook for 15 minutes. Rinse them under running water and throw away any snails which haven’t come out of their shells. Fry the onion and minced garlic until browned, add the cubed tomatoes, peperoncino, the washed and minced anchovies, the mint and the marjoram and cook for 10 minutes. Add the snails and cook for about an hour, adding white wine as needed. Serve as a soup with toasted slices of casareccio (rustic country loaf) bread.

THE NATURAL RESERVE OF  NAZZANO-TEVERE FARFA

Further north in the region, visitors can reach the Nature Reserve of Nazzano-Tevere Farfa, an important stop for migrating birds. These find refuge in the humid areas which developed after ENEL’s damming of the river waters in 1955, just downstream of where the Tiber and the Farfa’s join.
The dam’s building secondary - and unexpected - effect was to create an important ecosystem, the swamp, which has become increasingly rare throughout Italy.
Today this area is a natural regional reserve of European interest, and expands over 700 hectares; all its habitats are all influenced by the river and the swamp. Many migratory birds can be found along the banks, in the thick reed thickets, including the red heron, believed to be nearly extinct in Italy.

The humid forests are equally important and include willows, black alders and, in a more secluded area, poplars; today these have nearly disappeared in the river plains to make room for intensive faming of food-destined species.

Torrita Tiberina used to be a watch tower on the Tiber; it too has a fascinating medieval historical centre, whose alleys open onto panoramic views over the Tiber valley.
The river’s course then leads to Ponzano Romano; close by there is the Benedictine abbey of Sant’Andrea in flumine (10th century), an important side of Christian cult and culture. This was mentioned in the Cronaca di fra Benedetto del Soratte (chronicle by Brother Benedetto del Soratte) who believes it to have been founded in 747 by Charlemain, uncle of Charlemagne, creator of the Carolingian empire. The abbey had a fundamental role in controlling  traffic along the Tiber, because of its dominating position on the river ford.
