HISTORICAL AND NATURAL ATTRACTIONS

Close to the towns of Riano, Castelnuovo di Porto and Morlupo there are several archaeological areas including Etruscan necropolises and rustic Roman villas.
In the centre of the town of Rignano, the church of  Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio is adorned with exquisite frescoes from the 16th and 17th century; outside the town visitors can admire the suggestive Romanesque churches of Santi Abbondio and Abbondanzio and that of Santi Martiri.
In the Regional Nature Reserve of Monte Soratte, founded in 1997 and covering 440 hectares, lies the town of Sant’Oreste, with the Augustinian monastery of Santa Croce and the church of San Lorenzo Martire, which has a magnificent organ (1638). Just outside the town stands the church of Santa Maria Hospitalis, dating back to the 11th century. The thicket is inhabited by a rich wildlife (foxes, badgers, porcupines, wild hogs, squirrels, hedgehogs, dormice). Birdwatchers will be interested by the predatory birds’ nests, in the high rocks, whose existence is revealed by the occasional circling of hunting hawks.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

A SACRED MOUNTAIN: MOUNT SORATTE

Mount Soratte offers visitors many ways to discover nature. Thanks to its height and its beautiful and harsh nature, activities range from pleasant trips along paths with differing degrees of difficulty, winding along panoramic views, hermitages and mountain churches, to the exploration of caves and tunnels inside the mount, to free-climbing on three different rocky mountainsides (14 open ways). Fight lovers will find a launch base for hand-gliding on the top of the mount. Mountain-bike lovers too have a variety of paths, with different degrees of difficulty, to choose from.

A TRADITIONAL RECIPE

SAN GIOVANNI SNAILS

Category: main course
Difficulty: easy
Ready in: 2 hours
Season: summer

Ingredients (four servings)
1kg of well cleaned snails, 1 onion, three cloves of garlic, extra virgin olive oil, 1kg of cubed tomatoes (or substitute canned tomatoes), 4 salted anchovies, Roman mint (a lot), marjoram, 1 glass of dry white wine, salt and peperoncino (small Italian chilli).

Preparation
Wash the snails, place them in a pot and cover with cold salty water. Bring the water to a boil, and cook for 15 minutes. Rinse them under running water and throw away any snails which haven’t come out of their shells. Fry the onion and minced garlic until browned, add the cubed tomatoes, peperoncino, the washed and minced anchovies, the mint and the marjoram and cook for 10 minutes. Add the snails and cook for about an hour, adding white wine as needed. Serve as a soup with toasted slices of casareccio (rustic country loaf) bread.

 TOWARDS THE MONTE SORATTE

By following the modern via Flaminia, which traces the ancient consular road built, according to tradition, by the censor Caio Flaminio in 220 B.C., visitors will cross a beautiful farmed countryside. The road was built to connect Rome with the north-eastern territories in Italy; during the Middle Ages it was also a pilgrimage road, which explains the frequent small churches, hermitages and monasteries along the way. Close to the towns of Riano, Castelnuovo di Porto and Morlupo there are several archaeological areas with Etruscan necropolises and rustic Roman villas.

Rignano Flaminio, close to the Monte Soratte, is a typical example of the characteristics of this territory, where Roman history and the Middle Ages continually meet. The walls of the Medieval houses are scattered with Roman reliefs, among which is the bust of a woman which locals call, jokingly, the ““senini (small breasts) di Rignano”.

In the centre of Rignano, the church of Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio is adorned with exquisite frescoes from the 16th and 17th century; outside the town visitors can admire the suggestive Romanesque churches of Santi Abbondio and Abbondanzio and that of Santi Martiri.

In the Regional Nature Reserve of Monte Soratte, founded in 1997 and covering 440 hectares, lies the town of Sant’Oreste, with the Augustinian monastery of Santa Croce and the church of San Lorenzo Martire, which has a magnificent organ (1638). Just outside the town stands the church of Santa Maria Hospitalis, dating back to the 11th century; its frescoes and bas-reliefs tell the story of the Carolingian presence which affected the whole Soratte area from the moment when Charlemagne’s uncle, Charlemain, retired in the Santa Croce hermitage in the middle of the 8th century.
