Regional Natural Park of Bracciano-Martignano

Lakes of Bracciano and Martignano, originated from deep depressions due to the activity of a complex volcanoes system, create – together with Sabatini Mountains – the Natural Regional Park of Bracciano and Martignano Lakes. The Natural environment offers picturesque landscapes: mountains and small villages seem to reflect themselves on the Lake water, whose almost perfect circular shape seems to be designed.
Vegetation in proximity of waters is characterized by typical grove of reeds, where many bird species find shelter, such as colonies of wild ducks. A great number of waterfowl stays near the lakes, especially in winter, taking advantage of the food reserve, made of many insects and small fishes. The lake is plenty of fishes, including pike, tench, lake whitefish, perch and eel: fishing very common here and it was practised since the Prehistoric Age, as proves a pirogue found in the depths. In the mountains surrounding the lakes there are oak woods and chestnuts, alternate with olive groves, cultivated areas and pastures. Regarding the wildlife, Sabatini mountains are home of a rare wild cat, beaver, beech marten and coypu. They also give the chance to take part to wonderful excursions. For its environmental characteristics linked to the presence of hills and the big water basin, the Park allows to practise many sports. In fact, on its river there are sailing clubs, riding schools, tennis courts and an airfield for ultra light aircrafts. Because motor boats are forbidden, sailing is very practised. The Park has got an office in Trevignano, where is possible to get information about recommended natural excursions and know riches offered by this particular natural environment.
